Project History

TRC's first dedicated waste education project began in February 1998, building upon the education work already being carried out by Avon's recycling officers. Since then the project has gone from strength to stength and we now have three education officers, all fully qualified and experienced teachers, working in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. We have also carried out work in Bath and North East Somerset. As an acknowledged leader in the field of 3R's education we are often asked for advice and support from other organisations and authorities when they are setting up their own education projects.

A varied programme of curriculum-linked assemblies, workshops, presentations, teachers' resources and in-service training sessions has been developed, suitable for primary, special and secondary schools.

The main aim is to promote the 3Rs message: to reduce, re-use and recycle waste at school and at home, through learning and practical action.

The Education Project:

  • Helps schools to set up and maintain their own reuse and recycling schemes
  • Develops and delivers curriculum-linked workshops and assemblies to help children and teachers learn about the 3Rs
  • Supports schools running Environment Weeks and involved with Eco Schools
  • Encourages pupils to share their 3Rs learning with their families and friends
  • Offers a loan service for resource materials to local teachers
  • Provides a range of resources for sale nationally
  • Provides in-service training for teachers
  • Trains other waste educators to provide similar programmes
  • Works with teacher training institutions to develop teachers' awareness of the 3Rs

TRC's Education Team work with / for:

  • Nursery, primary, secondary and special schools
  • Local authority recycling / waste minimisation officers
  • LEA advisory teachers
  • Recycling and waste collection organisations
  • Community artists
  • Other environmentally linked NGOs
  • Teacher training institutions

Some recent successes:

  • Qualitative and quantitative feedback from parents indicates that the project raises awareness of waste issues within the local community as well as within schools
  • Feedback from teachers and children regarding our workshops is consistently enthusiastic
  • Feedback from teachers and education advisers regarding our loan resources is excellent
  • Our loan resources are in high demand and have been used during OFSTED inspections
  • We have worked with Waste Watch to provide training to other waste educators
  • We have delivered waste education seminars at CRN's annual conference
  • Our Literacy resources have been bought and used by organisations throughout the UK

The Education project is currently funded by:
    Bristol - Bristol City Council
North Somerset - North Somerset Council
