Why Waste Education?
Each UK household produces over one tonne of rubbish every year. Most of this is disposed of in the country's landfill sites, which are filling up rapidly. But the environmental impacts of waste are not limited to issues of disposal. We are wasting the Earth's natural resources, many of which are finite and will one day run out. In addition, the processing and transport of materials uses energy and creates pollution. Our challenge is to change our attitudes and habits; educating children up to think intelligently about 'rubbish' forms an important part of this process.
Waste Education and Climate Chanage
'Rubbish' is visible and familiar to even the youngest child, and as such is the ideal route into broader environmental issues. When learning about the 3Rs, children realise that their everyday actions can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment. A sense or responsibility is combined with one of empowerment that each individual can make a difference. This is a powerful message which can be transferred to other areas of global sustainability, particularly in the context of growing concerns about climate change.
