North Somerset Case Studies

Recycling in North Somerset’s schools is going from strength to strength.  Schools can collect paper, toner and printer cartridges, foil and cans for recycling.   At the beginning of the 2006/7 academic year, over 1000 bags of paper were collected from North Somerset schools in September alone - 80% more than in September 2005.

Below are details of three schools who are actively promoting the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) message, to show us some the really positive things that are happening in our schools.

Clevedon Secondary School has given a Year 9 design project a 3R’s theme. The pupils have been asked to design a piece of packaging that is not only graphically exciting but addresses the important issue of sustainability.  Resource Futures provided a thought provoking first lesson explaining what can be recycled in North Somerset and the wider issues of sustainability. The pupils looked at the different ways the same product can be packaged. They considered the most environmentally friendly way to package Jaffa Cakes, soup, washing powder and orange juice, and used this information when creating their own designs. Pupils at Yeo Moor Infant school empty fruit waste into their compost bin. At Yeo Moor Infant School in Clevedon the pupils are very keen recyclers.  As well as collecting paper for recycling, they also collect all their fruit waste for composting.  They have six compost bins and the compost is used in the school flower beds and tubs.   Children are responsible for collecting the fruit waste and making sure that it gets put into the compost bins.  As well as fruit waste they also add shredded paper from the office and the rabbit and guinea pig bedding - this creates a good mix to make healthy compost.

St Andrew’s C of E Junior School in Congresbury have put the 3 R’s firmly at the top of their priorities this year.  The school have signed up to the Eco Schools Award Scheme and are currently working towards their Silver Award.  They have a very active Eco Action Team, which is made up of two representatives elected from each class.  They gather ideas from the rest of the class and then tell everyone, in an assembly, what action they are going to take.

After looking at the paper they were collecting, the Eco Action Tam decided to start collecting Low Grade paper as well as High Grade. They suggested that each class hold a competition to decorate their two paper boxes and help people remember what can be put into each one.  The school have also started to buy recycled paper for the classrooms.

Pupils at St Andrew's proudly display their decorated paper recycling boxes.
