| Raw
fruit and vegetable waste and garden waste can be recycled in the garden
in a compost bin or compost heap. These materials break down naturally and
turn into brown, crumbly compost which can then be spread on the garden
as a mulch or fertilizer. |

'Green'
waste (that is garden waste and raw fruit and vegetable waste from the kitchen)
causes environmental problems if it goes to a landfill site, because it
rots down and produces dangerous 'greenhouse' gases. The methane gas produced
by the rotting waste can be collected and used as fuel, though much of it
is not collected and is an environmental hazard. It contributes to global
warming and can be explosive. |

| About a quarter of a typical household bin is taken up with compostable waste. It also takes up a lot of space in landfill sites and is a waste of energy to transport it, when it could be recycled at home. | ![]() |
