1 tonne of crushed recycled glass ( cullet ) saves 1.2 tonnes of raw materials and 150 litres of oil. That is a saving of 25% on the energy used.
Three different colours are used, green, brown, and clear. Green bottles protect wine from the light. They need to be recycled separately.
You cannot recycle window glass or drinking glasses with bottles because they contain lead, aluminium and potassium oxides as contaminants.
Bottles can be returned and refilled but they need to be made of fairly thick glass for this which makes them heavy to transport and there are also costs in washing and sterilising. This works well for milk bottles, which can be used up to 25 times, and for bottles used in pubs.
