Recycling in Bristol Primary and Nursery Schools |
It's easy to recycle in Bristol primary and nursery schools. The recycling boxes are FREE and so are the collections!
Schools find that most of the rubbish that they are putting in their bins is paper from the classrooms and offices. Almost all of this can, and should, be recycled.
If you haven't got a paper recycling system set up in your school this is how it works.
1. Put a black recycling box in each classroom and office. |
 |
2. Stick a sign on each box so everybody knows what to put in it - just paper. |
3. Put all your paper in the black boxes once it has been used on both sides. |
 |
4. Each week collect the paper from all the black boxes and put it into your green canvas bags.
|
| 5. On the right day, put the bags outside the school for the recycling lorry to collect. |
| |
To check your school's recycling day, or if the lorry forgets to collect your paper, ask an adult to call Bristol City Council's helpline on 0117 922 3838. |

Why not talk to your school cook about recycling the steel cans left-over from making your school dinners? You can put these out for recycling next to your bags of paper.
And don't forget the coffee jars from the staff room. An extra black box can be used to recycle these, as well as batteries used in science work, soup tins from teachers' lunches and anything else that can be recycled in Bristol homes. |

Composting in Bristol Primary Schools

|
Composting is a great way to recycle left-over fruit and vegetable waste. Inside a compost bin live lots of creatures: worms, millipedes, beetles, woodlice, slugs, snails, centipedes to name a few! They eat the vegetable waste and recycle it to make fantastic compost packed full of nutrients.
The creatures won't like it if they've just got fruit to eat - they need other dry food like cardboard, sawdust, shredded paper and leaves. Think carefully before you start a compost bin to make sure you can get a good balance of different materials. |

To order a free compost bin (or 2!) for your school please contact Helen Peake on 0117 930 4355 or email her.
Bristol City Council is keen to extend the collection of food waste and cardboard to schools. The Waste Services department is currently investigating how this can be done most efficiently and effectively.
