Re-using waste - or using waste again - is an ideal way to save resources, save energy and save space in landfill sites. It also saves you money! Re-using waste is even more valuable than recycling waste as it takes no more energy to do it.

Re-using waste at school

Many schools are good at re-using waste for making things. There are many ways in which waste can be used again in schools. For example, you can:

• Use one-sided paper in your computer printer and
  only use brand new paper when it's really needed
• Use old envelopes again for letter and dinner money
• Look after worksheets carefully, so they can be used again
• Use a plastic bottle for your drink and refill it each day
• Use camera film pots as glue pots
• Use decorated margarine tubs to store rubbers or sharpeners.
• Use decorated baby food tins for paintbrushes.

Re-using waste at home

In this country we used to be much better at re-using waste than we are now. We need to get back into good habits by:

• Getting milk from the milkman. A milk bottle gets used up to 25 times on average!
• Refilling plastic bottles and containers or using them for storage or scoops.
• Always taking a bag with you when you go shopping.
