Composting
Raw
fruit and vegetables and garden waste ('green waste') can be recycled in
the garden by using a compost bin or compost heap. These materials break down
naturally and turn into brown, crumbly compost which can then be spread
on the garden to feed the plants.
Green waste causes environmental problems if it goes to a landfill site, because as it rots it produces methane, a flammable gas which is thought to contribute to the greenhouse effect. About a quarter of what we throw away compostable waste. It takes up a lot of space in landfill sites and it is a waste of energy to transport it, when it could be recycled at home. |
