Green box recycling

Everybody who lives in a house in North Somerset has a FREE recycling collection from their home every 2 weeks. Most houses have a green box for recycling, but a few homes in the centre of Weston-super-Mare have sacks. Instead of putting rubbish in the bin, to be dumped in a landfill site, you can put many materials in your green box.

Look at how much can be recycled!

  • paper (but not envelopes with plastic windows)
  • clean aluminium (drinks) cans
  • clean steel (food) cans
  • clean aluminium foil
  • clean glass bottles and jars
  • old clothes
  • old shoes (in pairs!)

Put your green box outside your house by 7.30 am on the right day each fortnight and a lorry like this will take the materials away for recycling.

NEW! Green garden waste collections

Now most families in North Somerset can put green garden waste out for recycling. Put weeds, leaves, flowers, twigs and plain corrugated cardboard into your garden waste bag. Put the bag out for the recycling collectors every fortnight on the same day as your RUBBISH collections. The Council will recycle it into compost. If you need more bags you can buy them from local garden centres.

If you haven't got a green box or you don't know when your collection day is, ring North Somerset's Recycling Helpline on 01934 888802. For more information about recycling in North Somerset see the Council's website.

Recycling in Flats

If you live in a flat it's often difficult to use a green box. But don't worry! Many blocks of flats in North Somerset now have mini recycling banks to recycle paper, glass and cans.

If you live in a block of flats that hasn't got a mini recycling bank yet, phone the Recycling Helpline on 01934 888802 to arrange for one to be delivered.

Compost bins

Compost bins are just a tidy way of helping nature's recycling - in other words, rotting! Put your compost bin in your garden and put in:

  • uncooked fruit and vegetables
  • tea bags
  • shredded paper
  • cardboard (without lots of ink on it)
  • egg shells
  • leaves and dead plants from the garden

After several months you will find fantastic compost at the bottom of your compost bin, perfect for using in the garden to help plants grow.

North Somerset Council has a special offer on compost bins - you can get one for only £10! For more information see their website.
