Can I recycle my plastic bottles in Bristol?

Recyclable Plastic Bottles, Tops Off and Washed & Squashed
Yes! In 2005, 200 tonnes (4,000,000 bottles) were collected at the Council's plastic bottle bring banks. Unfortunately, the other 70 million bottles used by Bristol's residents went to landfill! The price of oil, and therefore plastic, has risen sharply this year so there's definitely a market for your old bottles.

Bristol City Council are now working with RECRESCO systems and the familiar orange banks have been replaced. You may have seen the new light and dark green cube shaped banks where you do your shopping as they are mainly located at supermarket recycling centres. The new RECRESCO system has an innovative collection system whereby a lorry sucks bottles out of the bank and chips them up. This saves time and fuel as the lorry needs to empty its load less often.

What  type of plastic bottles can be recycled at the banks?

Almost any bottle that once held a liquid or granules and a bottle top or flip-top cap:
  • mineral water
  • detergents
  • fabric softeners
  • shampoo bottles
  • soft drinks
  • milk bottles

What plastic containers are not wanted?

  • Brown medicine bottles
  • Garden, DIY chemicals and engine oil
  • Food packaging trays
  • Yoghurt pots and margarine tubs
  • Plant pots and trays

I'm keen to recycle plastic, but what else should I know?

  • Remove Tops The bottle tops are made of a different type of plastic to the bottles. Removing the tops also makes your bottles easier to compress and take to the bank.
  • ''Wash and Squash' - Rinsing your bottles minimises the likelihood of contamination during reprocessing.   Squashing your bottles can double the capacity of your Bank, even the new ones. This will reduce problems with other people dumping their plastic bottles near the banks causing nuisance and littering for the sites managers.
  • RECYCLERS DON'T LITTER - collect your bottles in a reusable bag and if the bank is full, take your bottles home to recycle another day.
